How Did It Get This Bad? | Curbside | Passenger Facilities | Track Capacity
The ticket counters and waiting areas used by Amtrak and Metra are too small for today's crowds. The passageways are narrow and maze-like. Even frequent visitors express difficulty in navigating the station.
Amtrak has begun several major changes that will help:
- A new Metropolitan Lounge for sleeping car passengers is being built near the Great Hall. It will be larger than the existing lounge and have direct access from Canal St. The Concourse space now occupied by the Metropolitan Lounge will be used to expand loading area for coach passengers.
- A new lounge for business travelers have been created off the southwest corner of the Great Hall.
- A ticketing and customer service kiosk has been added to the Great Hall. This is a big step towards restoring the Great Hall to its function as the Main Waiting Room.
Additional funding is needed to complete the improvements.
